China is rapidly becoming one of Ethiopia’s most important coffee markets. According to the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA), China has climbed from seventh to fourth among Ethiopian coffee importers over the past two years (FurtherAfrica), with Ethiopia exporting 16,300 metric tons of coffee to China over a recent five-month period, valued at USD 113 million (FurtherAfrica).
The shift follows Ethiopia’s first-ever bilateral coffee trade conference with China, held alongside the inauguration of the Ethiopia Coffee (China) Trading Center (FurtherAfrica), an initiative designed to strengthen Ethiopia’s position as a premium coffee origin in the Chinese market (FurtherAfrica). Officials attribute the sharp rise in revenue to shipments of organic coffee and improvements in delivery services (FurtherAfrica).
While Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Belgium remain Ethiopia’s top coffee export destinations (FurtherAfrica), China’s rapid climb signals a broader diversification of demand — a trend Danka is positioned to serve as global buyers increasingly look beyond traditional markets for premium Ethiopian origin coffee.
